It has been revealed that St Helens Council’s cabinet will vote on the next version of the St Helens Local Plan on December 12 after which there will be an eight week consultation period.
James Wright, chair of Rainford Action group, said: “Having waited almost exactly two years to publish the next version of the Local Plan, it would be surprising, if not staggeringly cynical, of St Helens Council to run a consultation period on this fundamental issue over the Christmas holiday period for a second time. The consultation must not begin before the start of 2019.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the new version of the plan and fully expect it to reflect the figures published in September by the Office for National Statistics that showed housing need in St Helens is substantially lower than the council has previously claimed. Should the plan not reflect these figures, it would lack any shred of credibility.
“The council cannot continue with its increasingly desperate attempts to justify destroying protected land when all the evidence suggests there is no need to do so in St Helens, a borough with a falling population and ample brown field land that should be developed first.”
